History

What we know as Michelino’s today, opened on the San Antonio Riverwalk as the River Roost in 1968, the same year as the World’s Fair, Hemisfair.  At that time, the Riverwalk didn’t look anything like it does today.

In 1974, the River Roost was renamed Café Michelino’s for the Italian cuisine we served and as a nod to one of the primary owners. Cafe Michelino’s was one of fewer than 5 restaurants on the river.

Michelino’s has hosted or participated in thousands of events, including Pachanga del Rio, art openings and shows and multiple NBA champion parades. Marriage proposals and anniversary celebrations happen daily.

It remains in a very active part of the Riverwalk.  In April 1990, Joan Lunden hosted a live broadcast of Good Morning America on ABC.  Queen Elizabeth II enjoyed live music on Michelino’s patio as she floated by on a river barge in 1991.  The restaurant served as a movie set in 2000- a San Antonio filmmaker shot part of “Come and Take It Day” at Michelino’s where he used to work behind the bar.

We have been featured in the San Antonio Express News, Texas Monthly, Texas Highways, Southwest Airlines Magazine and Golf Magazine to name a few.

The most recent modernization/expansion of Michelino’s was in 2014. Whether you are famous, royalty, or an average Joe or Jane, come enjoy Michelino’s. From our home to yours, Arrivederci!
